Depression is much more common than we believe. However, to get precise figures in terms of its prevalence is difficult as many of them go undetected and untreated. Women are twice more often affected by depression than men.
Some people experience a few symptoms, some many. The severity of symptoms varies with individuals and also varies over time.
One student I met was not getting good grades in her exam. So she went into depression. Her father came to me after he found her all day locked out in the room, talking to no one. Her friends also complained that she sat silently in the class and became very afraid when her teacher asked her anything.
Her anxiety was very high. Negative ideas continuously occupied her mind. She was very irritable.
She hadn’t slept for the last 3-4 days. Her sleep was very disturbed. She was not ready to take any medicine. She was shy and reserved in nature. She wanted to live alone. She didn’t like company. She always used to get worried thinking what the other people thought about her. She had the fear to take responsibility. She was very sensitive and would start weeping on small things.
At her first follow-up, she reported some changes in her condition. A few of her symptoms, such as anxiety, restlessness, weakness, and fear of bad happenings, etc. were showing some improvement in terms of relief with the medicine. Other symptoms were as it is. As per her health condition, Dr. Khurana did the required changes in her medicine. A few months later she reported a good improvement in her condition. She had experienced a 20% improvement in her recovery from depression. He was sleeping for a few hours.
After 3 months he reported 75% recovery from her complaint. Her relief from anxiety, irritability, and disturbed sleep had improved a lot. She overcame her fear of bad happening. Her negative thoughts were totally absent. Her weakness had reduced. She was more cheerful now.
